In the US, we love the road trip. Our car takes us to the cities, plains, deserts, mountains, canyons and seashores of America. It’s like a bunch of different countries built into one where adventures and discoveries are there waiting to be found.

 

Cunningham Homestead, Tetons

This land was homesteaded in 1888 by John Pierce Cunningham in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Two alleged horse thieves, who were wintering on the ranch, were surrounded and gunned down by a posse in 1893. It is now located inside Grand Teton National Park.

It 2000, Barnum’s Kaleidoscape came to Chicago. It was presented as an old fashioned, European type circus having one ring under a canvas tent. Alexander Petrov and Lucky Kirlova were the performers.

Above the Mogollon Rim, Arizona

The Mogollon Rim runs for about 200 miles across the northern half of Arizona and forms the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. It is over 7000 feet above sea level and is where you can find beautiful pine forests. It then drops about 2000 feet to where you will be amongst cactus and scrub brush. Many of the old westerns took place in this stunning part of Arizona.

Cambridge Library

The Cambridge Public Library in Cambridge, Illinois, was established in 1851 and was the first library built in Henry, County. This building was built in 1929 to house the growing collection of printed materials.

Gull

This Seagull was photographed using a longer shutter speed. It was taken on the south shore of Lake Michigan in Indiana Dunes State Park.

We got a nice sunny day after fresh snow fell in the woods around Chestnut Mountain, by the Mississippi River in western Illinois.

City Carnival

The carnival came every year to Uptown in Chicago and was set up in the local public schoolyard. 

Snow Fence

The sun came out the day after a new snow fell in Lincoln Park, Chicago. This snow fence was set up to prevent the drifting of snow and put down some lovely shadows.

2011 Blizzard in Chicago

People bundled up and trekking onto Lake Michigan during the 2011 blizzard, This storm is the blizzard that crippled Chicago and shut down Lake Shore Drive.

Old Sod House, Nebraska

Houses were built out of sod or turf in places where there was a shortage of trees and were known as “soddys”. The walls were very thick and could be quite comfortable in both summer and winter. This cabin sits near Gothenburg, Nebraska.

Wood’s Grist Mill

Deep River County Park near Hobart, Indiana, was built in the 1800’s and still grinds corn meal using the large mill-stones. The park is home to the Deep River Grinders who play old time baseball under 1858 rules.
